What Happens to Your Medicare If You Move to a Different State

While your standardized Medigap policy moves across state lines without underwriting, monthly premiums change based on local factors.

Does Your Medigap Policy Move With You?

In most instances, you can keep your existing Medigap policy when you move across state lines, provided you remain enrolled in Original Medicare. Private insurance companies cannot cancel your standardized Medigap plan (such as Plan G or Plan N) simply because you changed your state of residence. You do not need to reapply or go through medical underwriting just to maintain the policy you already own.

However, your monthly premium will almost certainly change. Medigap insurers price their plans based on local medical costs, state regulations, and local demographic factors. Moving from a rural county in Iowa to a metropolitan area in South Florida will likely result in a noticeable premium increase, even if you keep the exact same insurance company and benefit plan letter.
