When DIY Isn’t Enough

While many retirees successfully manage state-to-state Medicare transitions on their own, certain complex medical and financial circumstances call for expert guidance. Consider seeking assistance from professional advisors or independent insurance specialists in the following situations:

  • Managing complex chronic medical conditions: If you rely on ongoing specialized care—such as active cancer treatment, dialysis, or complex biological medications—transitioning plans requires coordination. An expert helps ensure uninterrupted access to essential specialists and prior-authorization continuities.
  • Moving into or out of Medigap waiver states: Understanding how to transition between standardized alphabetical Medigap plans and specialized state-standardized plans in Massachusetts, Minnesota, or Wisconsin often requires local insurance knowledge.
  • Navigating Dual-Eligible (Medicare & Medicaid) benefits: Medicaid is a joint federal and state program administered individually by each state. Moving across state lines terminates your Medicaid benefits in your former state. You must re-apply for Medicaid in your new state, which involves meeting different income standards, asset limits, and administrative application procedures.
  • Switching from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare with Medigap: If you wish to drop Medicare Advantage and purchase a Medigap policy during your relocation SEP, you may face medical underwriting depending on state laws. A licensed broker can identify carriers with favorable underwriting guidelines or determine if you qualify for state-specific guaranteed issue rights.

For free, unbiased local guidance, contact the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) in your new home state. SHIP counselors offer free, confidential, state-specific assistance to help you evaluate local Medicare options without commercial sales bias.
