When Does Your Special Enrollment Period Begin?
The exact timeline for your move-related Special Enrollment Period depends entirely on when you notify your insurance carrier about your change of address:
- If you notify your plan before you move: Your SEP begins the full calendar month before the month of your move, continues through the month of your move, and extends for two full calendar months after the month you move. This provides a four-month window to secure continuous coverage.
- If you notify your plan after you move: Your SEP begins the month you notify your insurance company, plus two full calendar months following that notification month.
For example, if you move to a new state on June 15 and inform your Medicare Advantage provider in May, your SEP spans from May 1 through August 31. If you enroll in a new plan before June 15, your new coverage takes effect on July 1, preventing any coverage interruption.
