Not Checking Your Social Security Benefits

Most people in the U.S. will rely on Social Security during their retirement. But how many people regularly check their benefits? Even before you retire, it’s so important to double check on the Social Security Administration website by visiting the “my Social Security” section.

Here, you’ll see an estimation of your Social Security, but you’ll also find out if you’re reached the minimum goal of collecting 40 credits in order to receive your benefits. Many people, particularly the one partner in a couple that stayed home instead of working, will find that they may not have reached the minimum amount of credits or working years in order to receive Social Security.

But finding out ahead of time, you’ll be in a much better position to plan your retirement. Not only that, but you’ll have a better understanding of your finances going forwards, especially if you expect your benefits to cover a large portion of your retirement income.
