9 Ways to Shop at Costco Without a Membership

2. Transfer Your Prescriptions to the Costco Pharmacy

Healthcare costs represent one of the most significant budget categories for retirees. Even if you are enrolled in a robust Medicare Part D plan, you may still face substantial out-of-pocket costs for specific medications, especially those that fall into higher pricing tiers or are excluded entirely.

You do not need a membership to use the Costco Pharmacy. Federal and state regulations generally prohibit pharmacies from restricting access to prescription medications based on club memberships. Because Costco operates with very low margins, their cash prices for generic drugs frequently beat the copays required by standard insurance plans.

When arriving at the warehouse, calmly inform the door attendant that you are there to pick up a prescription, and they will wave you through. To transition your medications, you can call the Costco pharmacy directly and ask the pharmacist to transfer your scripts from your current provider. Always ask the pharmacist to compare the cash price of the drug with your insurance copay. The official Medicare website provides excellent tools for tracking your drug costs, but running a manual comparison at the pharmacy counter often reveals hidden savings.
