9 Ways to Shop at Costco Without a Membership

1. Navigate the Aisles With a Costco Shop Card

The single most effective method for bypassing the membership desk is the Costco Shop Card. This is Costco’s proprietary gift card, and it serves as a golden ticket for non-members. While only an active member can purchase or reload a Shop Card, anyone can use it to enter the warehouse and pay for merchandise.

If you have adult children, neighbors, or friends who are active members, simply ask them to purchase a Shop Card on your behalf. You can hand them the cash, and they can load the card with any amount ranging from $25 to $2,000. When you arrive at the store, simply show the card to the attendant at the entrance. At the checkout register, the cashier will swipe the card to pay for your items. If your total grocery bill exceeds the balance on your Shop Card, you can generally pay the remaining balance using cash or a debit card; however, it is wise to confirm the specific payment policy with your local warehouse manager, as occasional variations exist.

This strategy is particularly valuable because it also grants you access to the Costco gas station. Costco fuel prices consistently rank among the lowest in the nation, and swiping a Shop Card at the pump authorizes the transaction without prompting you for a membership card.
