17. You may be able to claim spousal benefits even if you’re divorced

If you haven’t remarried and if you’ve been married for 10 years with your ex, you could claim spousal benefits from them. Not only that, your ex might do the same if you’ve earned more than they have.

If something like this happens, don’t worry. Neither of your Social Securities will suffer. You won’t even be notified!

In this case, while your ex would have to wait until they’re 62 to claim, you could claim earlier than that only as long as you’ve been divorced for at least two years.
