13. Your Social Security benefits could be lower if you don’t work at least 35 years

It’s important to work for at least 35 years for two reasons:

For starters, the program will look at the 35 years you’ve earned the most amount of money. Secondly, even if you don’t work for 35 years, the program will simply add $0 wages to your benefits. Naturally, this will lover your average, meaning you’ll receive thinner checks during retirement.
