18. Survivor’s benefits may be available to widows and widowers

Claiming survivor benefits is a little different. First off, you should know that the amount you’ll receive will depend on whether or not they had already claimed their Social Security.

If you and your deceased spouse have a child that is under the age of 16, you may claim benefits at any age. If not, you can claim at 50 if you are disabled. If not, you’d still be able to start the process when you turn 60. So those are the important numbers you should keep in mind depending on your situation.
