11 Mistakes to Avoid When Downsizing Your Home

5. Failing to Prioritize Aging-in-Place Features

Excellent retirement housing advice always centers on planning for your future mobility, not just your current health. It is a critical error to fall in love with a quaint, multi-story townhouse simply because it requires less yard work. If the master bedroom is on the second floor or the entrance requires navigating steep steps, the home may become unlivable in ten or fifteen years.

When selecting your downsized home, prioritize universal design principles. Look for properties that offer single-level living, zero-step entryways, wide hallways that can accommodate mobility aids, and bathrooms equipped with walk-in showers and reinforced walls for grab bars. A home that supports your independence will keep you safer and delay or prevent the need for expensive assisted living facilities.
