11 Mistakes to Avoid When Downsizing Your Home

10. Forgetting to Measure the New Floor Plan

Visualizing how your current furniture will look in a smaller home is incredibly difficult. A sofa that looks perfectly proportioned in a large suburban living room will easily swallow the entire floor space of a downsized condominium.

Do not wait until moving day to discover that your dining table blocks the kitchen entrance or that your king-sized bed prevents the bedroom door from closing. Obtain a detailed floor plan of your new residence with exact dimensions. Measure your essential furniture pieces and create a scale model—either using graph paper or a free online room planner—to map out exactly where each item will go. If a piece does not fit the diagram, it must be sold or donated before the moving truck arrives.
