Kansas

– Social Security income with federal adjusted gross income under $75,000 is exempt from state tax

– There’s no estate tax

– Free audit courses at state institutions for residents 60 and older

– Senior centers throughout the state provide transportation assistance to seniors unable to travel on their own; $3 paratransit services in Kansas City

– Discounts for vehicle fees at state parks

– Reduced fees for hunting and fishing licenses

Kentucky

– Social Security benefits are not taxed, and most taxpayers get a retirement income exemption up to $31,110

– Tuition exemption at any state institution for seniors aged 60 and more

– Residents 65 and older who own a Medicare card pay 75-cent fares through the Louisville area’s transit authority while residents 62 and over pay 50 cents for Lexington public transportation

– Residents 65 and older receive discounts for hunting and fishing licenses

Louisiana

– The state does not levy taxes on Social Security income nor on up to $6,000 of pension and annuity income for residents 65 and older

– Free tuition and 50% discount for books for residents aged 55 or older registered at any state college or university

– 40 cents to $1 public transportation fee in New Orleans and $2 for paratransit for residents aged 65 and older

– No state sales tax levied on food, drugs, wheelchairs, and prosthetic devices

– Residents aged 60 and older pay $5 for hunting and fishing license

– Free entrance to state parks for 62 and older
