The Worst 5 States for Seniors to Be Healthy

3. West Virginia: The Toll of Isolation and Topography

West Virginia’s beautiful mountainous terrain creates unique, persistent challenges for older adults. Topography heavily influences healthcare access. Winding, steep roads become treacherous in the winter, effectively isolating seniors who may no longer feel comfortable driving in poor conditions. This geographic isolation leads to delayed medical care and high rates of depression among older residents.

West Virginia struggles with the highest rate of tooth loss among seniors in the nation, which is a key indicator of overall healthcare neglect. Dental health is directly tied to cardiovascular health and proper nutrition. Furthermore, the state has a historically high rate of smoking, resulting in widespread chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other respiratory issues among retirees.

If you retire in West Virginia, building a strong local support network is paramount. You cannot rely solely on driving yourself to appointments year-round. Coordinate with local Area Agencies on Aging to understand what transportation services exist in your county. If you use tobacco, talk to your doctor about cessation programs; Medicare Part B covers counseling to help you quit smoking, which can immediately improve your respiratory health regardless of your age.

Some of the measures offered here are inconsequential. How many people smoke is no measure of whether you will smoke. The same is true of drinking alcohol or over-eating. What is critical is the quality of nursing homes or assisted living homes, quality and availability of medical facilities, affordability of being able to live there, crime rates (which are not addressed), availability of public transportation, senior recreational opportunities, etc. Many of these are simply not in this article. If they were, I think the scoring by state would be vastly different.

All 5 of those states are RED states. People who are easily influenced by lies and a party that is in a self-destruct mode!!
