The Worst 5 States for Seniors to Be Healthy

5. Arkansas: Rural Disadvantage and Food Insecurity

Arkansas rounds out the list of the worst states for senior health. The state suffers from an acute shortage of home healthcare workers and nursing home staff, putting immense pressure on family caregivers. When seniors require post-acute care following a surgery or a fall, the wait times for rehabilitation facilities can be dangerously long.

Food insecurity is another major crisis for older Arkansans. A significant portion of the senior population does not have consistent, reliable access to nutritious meals. Poor nutrition accelerates muscle loss, weakens the immune system, and complicates the management of almost every chronic disease. Arkansas also reports low rates of seniors receiving regular vision and hearing screenings, which are critical for preventing falls and maintaining cognitive health.

If you call Arkansas home, you must become a fierce advocate for your own care. Do not skip specialized screenings; poor hearing and vision drastically increase your risk of accidental injury. If you are struggling with food costs, apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or connect with local Meals on Wheels chapters. Adequate nutrition is the foundation of senior health, and there is no shame in utilizing community resources to maintain it.

Some of the measures offered here are inconsequential. How many people smoke is no measure of whether you will smoke. The same is true of drinking alcohol or over-eating. What is critical is the quality of nursing homes or assisted living homes, quality and availability of medical facilities, affordability of being able to live there, crime rates (which are not addressed), availability of public transportation, senior recreational opportunities, etc. Many of these are simply not in this article. If they were, I think the scoring by state would be vastly different.
