5. Notice of Determination / Award Letter (Form SSA-L109)
When you first apply for retirement, spousal, or survivor benefits, the SSA issues an official Notice of Determination, commonly known as your Award Letter. This document details your baseline entitlement: your Full Retirement Age (FRA), your chosen claiming age, any reductions for early claiming, or any delayed retirement credits earned up to age 70.
Your Award Letter represents the foundational legal baseline for your retirement income. Private pension funds, annuity providers, and insurance companies often require a copy of this exact document before disbursing retirement annuities or setting up lifetime benefit guarantees. Mortgage lenders also ask for this letter when you buy a home or refinance a mortgage during retirement.
Never throw away your original Award Letter. Because obtaining duplicate copies of older determination notices directly from government archives can take weeks or months, keeping the original in your permanent safe-deposit box or locked fireproof safe ensures you always have proof of entitlement.
