This clear infographic highlights five essential Social Security notices and key deadlines you must remember.

At a Glance: The Essentials

  • Tax Statements (Form SSA-1099): Arrives every January; you need it to file federal taxes and prove your yearly benefit total.
  • Strict Appeal Windows: Notices regarding overpayments or benefit reductions carry a rigid 60-day deadline (plus 5 days for mailing) to file an appeal.
  • Earnings History Errors: You must correct wage misreports within 3 years, 3 months, and 15 days following the tax year in which you earned the income.
  • Medicare IRMAA Adjustments: Extra Medicare surcharges triggered by higher income can be reduced using Form SSA-44 if you experienced a life-changing event.
