While you can complete standard Social Security retirement applications or Medicare enrollments on the web, you cannot file a claim for the $255 lump-sum death payment online. The Social Security Administration requires direct direct communication with an agency representative to process Form SSA-8.

To start the application process, call the Social Security Administration national toll-free line at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) between 8:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday. You can also schedule an appointment at your local Social Security field office.

Understand the distinction between reporting a death and applying for the benefit.
