You must actively monitor the timeline when seeking federal death benefits. Under federal regulations, eligible family members face a strict deadline of exactly two years from the worker’s date of death to file Form SSA-8 (Application for Lump-Sum Death Payment).

If you submit your application two years and one day after the date of death, the Social Security Administration will reject your claim, and you permanently forfeit the payment. Very few exceptions exist to this two-year statutory limitation. The SSA grants extensions only under rare conditions, such as military service under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act or administrative errors committed directly by Social Security personnel.
