4. Home Sharing

Home sharing takes the traditional roommate concept and adapts it for older adults. In this arrangement, a homeowner rents out a spare bedroom to a tenant. While this generates supplemental income, many retirees use home sharing for companionship and mutual support rather than pure profit.

You can negotiate reduced rent in exchange for the tenant taking on specific household chores, such as yard work, cooking, or grocery shopping. Several national matching services now exist specifically to pair older homeowners with compatible housemates, conducting background checks and helping draft living agreements. It provides security, reduces housing costs, and keeps you actively engaged with another person daily.
