2. Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)

An Accessory Dwelling Unit—frequently called a granny pod, in-law suite, or backyard cottage—is a small, fully functional living space located on the same property as a primary single-family home. ADUs can be attached to the main house, converted from a garage, or built as a standalone structure in the backyard.

This arrangement provides an excellent balance of independence and proximity to family. You maintain your own private living space, kitchen, and routine, while family members remain just a few steps away to help with heavy lifting, transportation, or emergency support. Before committing to this path, check your local zoning laws; many municipalities have recently relaxed restrictions on ADUs to help ease housing shortages, but permits and utility hookups still require careful navigation.
