10 Best and Worst Things to Do When Looking for a Place to Retire

February 28, 2020 · Retirement Life

20. Don’t Base Your Decision Solely on Proximity to Family

We’ve seen this happen time and again. Seniors who moved to live closer to their family, either adult children or grandchildren, later on had to watch their loved ones move away. The truth is, younger generations are more mobile and we shouldn’t mold our retirement after them.

Planning out trips or inviting your family over is usually a better decision, especially if you’ve picked a place where transportation isn’t an issue. If your only reason behind moving to a city is because your loved ones live there and they leave, what will you be left with, after all?

Have a sit down with your family and try and coordinate your move. Are they willing to visit from time to time? How often? How will they come over? Once you have these answers you can narrow down your search. Nevertheless, this is your move, at the end of the day, and you can take your loved ones’ opinion into consideration but that’s about it.
