13 Free Ways to Keep Thieves From Breaking In

6. Master the Art of the “Hold Mail” Request

An overflowing mailbox or a stack of newspapers accumulating on the driveway is a glaring neon sign that screams, “The homeowners are out of town!” For retirees who frequently travel or spend seasons in different climates, managing deliveries is a critical component of home security.

The United States Postal Service offers a completely free Hold Mail service. You can arrange this online or by filling out a simple card at your local post office. They will securely hold all your mail for up to 30 days and deliver it in one batch upon your return. Furthermore, pause all newspaper subscriptions and ask a neighbor to quickly grab any unexpected flyers, menus, or packages that might be dropped on your porch while you are away.
