13 Free Ways to Keep Thieves From Breaking In

Closing these thick blue curtains at dusk hides your home’s interior from potential intruders watching from outside.

4. Close Your Blinds When the Sun Goes Down

When evening arrives and you turn on your interior lights, your home essentially becomes a brightly lit display case. Anyone standing on the dark sidewalk can see straight into your living spaces, mapping out the floor plan, identifying where you keep your laptop, spotting your jewelry box on the dresser, and noting exactly who is—or isn’t—home.

Make closing the blinds and drawing the curtains a daily evening ritual. This simple action completely removes the visual temptation from the street. If a burglar cannot see what is inside or determine if the home is occupied, the risk calculation heavily shifts against them. By denying them a clear line of sight, you protect your privacy and your possessions simultaneously.
