13 Free Ways to Keep Thieves From Breaking In

11. Cultivate Strong Relationships with Your Neighbors

The most sophisticated electronic security system cannot replace the watchful eyes of a vigilant neighbor. Communities where residents know each other and recognize the regular vehicles and routines naturally deter criminal activity.

You do not need to formally join a neighborhood watch program to benefit from community security. Simply introduce yourself to the people living on either side of you and across the street. Exchange phone numbers. Let them know when you plan to be out of town and ask them to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Offer to do the same for them. A neighbor who knows you are on vacation in Florida will immediately recognize that a moving van backed into your driveway is a massive red flag.
