8 States to Retire For Less Than 45K a Year

4. Alabama: Southern Comfort and Coastal Access

Alabama is a standout destination for those who want warm weather, Southern hospitality, and highly favorable financial conditions. The state boasts some of the absolute lowest property tax rates in the entire country; the median property tax bill is frequently less than $1,000 per year. For a retiree on a $45,000 budget, this keeps a massive amount of cash freed up for daily living and leisure.

On the income tax front, Alabama fully exempts Social Security benefits and defined-benefit pensions from state taxes. While distributions from 401(k)s and traditional IRAs are fully taxed, the incredibly low property taxes and general cost of living usually offset this easily.

Alabama offers geographic diversity that appeals to various tastes. The Gulf Shores region provides access to spectacular white-sand beaches. College towns like Auburn and Tuscaloosa offer vibrant cultural scenes, lifelong learning opportunities, and top-tier collegiate sports. Meanwhile, Huntsville combines a booming tech and aerospace economy with an affordable suburban lifestyle and excellent medical infrastructure.
