8 States to Retire For Less Than 45K a Year

Experience the charm of Nashville, Indiana, where affordable living meets a welcoming, small-town community atmosphere.

8. Indiana: The Crossroads of Affordability

Indiana offers a stable, predictable, and highly affordable environment for retirees. The cost of housing is consistently well below the national average, and daily expenses are easily manageable on a fixed income. Indiana utilizes a flat state income tax rate, and while it does tax traditional retirement account withdrawals, it completely exempts Social Security benefits.

The state combines a strong manufacturing and agricultural economy with a low regulatory burden, keeping utility and grocery prices in check. Property taxes are also capped by state law, providing retirees with vital protection against sudden tax hikes.

Indiana shines in its variety of living options. Fort Wayne provides a deeply affordable urban experience with an excellent parks system. Bloomington, home to Indiana University, offers a thriving arts scene, diverse culinary options, and excellent healthcare. If you want proximity to a massive global hub without the associated costs, the northwest corner of the state puts you a short train ride away from downtown Chicago.
