4. Macon, Georgia

Known as the “Heart of Georgia,” Macon delivers Southern charm, rich musical history, and a warm climate at a fraction of the cost of Atlanta or Savannah. Retirees flocking to Georgia benefit from the state’s highly favorable tax structure, which includes generous exemptions on retirement income for residents over the age of 62. In Macon, a budget of $100,000 can secure a comfortable brick ranch or a cozy cottage in quiet residential pockets.

The city is famous for its annual International Cherry Blossom Festival and features a highly walkable downtown filled with historic architecture, dining, and arts venues. Healthcare is accessible through local medical centers, though highly specialized treatments might require a drive up I-75 to Atlanta. If you want a mild winter and a strong sense of community, Macon stands out among cheap places to retire.
