1. Toledo, Ohio

Situated at the western tip of Lake Erie, Toledo offers an incredibly low cost of living paired with big-city amenities. You can frequently find mid-century, two-bedroom ranch homes or historic bungalows in established neighborhoods well below the $100,000 threshold. Toledo boasts a renowned art museum, a top-tier zoo, and a sprawling Metroparks system that provides miles of walking and cycling trails perfectly suited for an active retirement.

From a healthcare perspective, the presence of major regional hospital systems ensures you do not have to travel far for specialized treatments. Ohio also offers reasonable tax treatments for retirees, although you should weigh local property tax rates against the low purchase price of the home. The trade-off for this affordability is the weather; winters are undeniably cold and cloudy, which may require an adjustment if you are relocating from a Sunbelt state.
