3. Charleston, West Virginia

If you prefer mountainous landscapes and a smaller-town feel, the capital city of West Virginia offers striking natural beauty and deep affordability. Charleston sits at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha rivers, offering retirees easy access to fishing, hiking, and boating. Finding houses under 100k USA is relatively easy here, particularly if you look just outside the immediate downtown core.

Because it is a capital city, Charleston features a more robust infrastructure than you might expect for its size, including a commercial airport and solid regional medical facilities. West Virginia has been phasing out state income taxes on Social Security for most retirees, adding to the region’s financial appeal. The pace of life here is relaxed, making it an excellent choice for those looking to escape traffic and urban sprawl.
