6. High-Cost Gym and Fitness Club Memberships

Maintaining physical health remains essential as you age, but paying $50 to $150 per month for a commercial health club membership you rarely visit is financially wasteful. Studies on wasted subscription spending show that consumers squander an average of $21 monthly on completely unused recurring memberships, with gym passes accounting for a large portion of that abandoned spend.

Before paying full retail prices for private gym facilities, review your current Medicare coverage options. Many Medicare Advantage and select Medicare Supplement plans cover fully subsidized memberships to programs like SilverSneakers or Renew Active at no additional charge. You can also explore local senior community centers through the National Council on Aging (NCOA) to access fitness classes, walking tracks, and swimming pools tailored specifically to older adults at zero cost.
