1. Premium Cable and Satellite Television Packages

Traditional cable and satellite packages represent one of the single largest fixed media expenses in American households. Industry surveys show that bundled cable bills average $187.99 per month, while unbundled plans still hover near $121.86 monthly. Most cable packages force you to pay for hundreds of channels, yet typical viewers watch fewer than fifteen regular networks. When you live on a structured budget, paying roughly $2,250 every year for unviewed programming quickly eats into capital meant for medical expenses or travel.

Recent viewership statistics highlight a massive shift in television habits. Traditional cable now accounts for only 20% of total U.S. television viewing, while streaming platforms command over 47%. Retirees are taking notice by cutting the cord entirely or dropping down to basic over-the-air (OTA) high-definition antennas. Modern digital antennas cost between $25 and $50 as a one-time purchase, delivering clear local channels including major network news, sports, and daytime programming without a recurring monthly charge.
