The Southwest and West: Budget Retirement Locations

The Western United States is notorious for high living costs, but specific inland cities still offer safe havens for tight budgets.

16. Las Cruces, New Mexico

Situated in the high desert, Las Cruces offers stunning mountain views, a warm, dry climate, and a cost of living significantly lower than nearby Arizona or Colorado. As the home of New Mexico State University, the town provides cultural events and affordable public transit. New Mexico recently exempted Social Security income from state taxes for the vast majority of retirees, removing a previous financial hurdle for moving here.

17. Tulsa, Oklahoma

Tulsa has invested heavily in revitalizing its downtown and public spaces, resulting in magnificent areas like the Gathering Place park. Despite these upgrades, Tulsa remains highly affordable. Oklahoma does not tax Social Security benefits, and general living expenses fall about 12% below the national average. The medical infrastructure is vast and accessible.

18. El Paso, Texas

El Paso boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year and ranks as one of the safest cities of its size in the country. The desert climate limits heating and cooling costs during the mild winters, though summer air conditioning requires budgeting. Housing remains very cheap compared to the rest of the country, and the complete lack of a state income tax in Texas seals the deal.

19. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

If you want the amenities of a major metropolis without the price tag, Oklahoma City delivers. It features a major commercial airport, an NBA team, and extensive healthcare networks. The city’s sheer geographic size keeps housing inventory high and prices low. You can easily find comfortable, safe apartments that fit into a $600 to $700 monthly housing allowance.
