30 Cities in USA Way Too Expensive for Retirees

Protecting Your Wealth Through Geographic Arbitrage

If your desired destination is on the list of expensive cities, you do not necessarily have to abandon your dreams—but you do have to pivot your strategy. Geographic arbitrage is the practice of earning or saving money in a strong economy while spending it in a weaker or more affordable one.

Instead of moving directly into the heart of an expensive metro, look at the exurbs or neighboring states. For instance, if you love Washington D.C., retiring to a quieter part of Virginia or Pennsylvania keeps you within a manageable train ride without subjecting your daily budget to capital-city prices. If you want the Pacific Northwest experience without Seattle’s price tag, look toward smaller communities in eastern Washington.

You can verify current trends and run cost-of-living comparisons using tools from financial education sites like Investopedia or examine current local mortgage and housing trends on Bankrate before making a commitment.
