3. Mexico: Familiar, Close, and Culturally Rich

Mexico remains the most popular destination for American expats, hosting over one million US citizens. Its proximity to the United States makes it an easy choice for retirees who want to fly back frequently to visit grandchildren. From the colonial elegance of San Miguel de Allende to the breezy beaches of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico offers a climate and lifestyle for virtually every preference.

Living overseas cheap does not mean sacrificing quality in Mexico. High-speed internet, modern shopping centers, and top-tier healthcare are standard in expat hubs. A budget of $1,800 a month affords a beautiful home, weekly maid service, dining out several times a week, and comprehensive medical care. Furthermore, direct flights to major US cities mean you are never more than a few hours away from home.
