18 Places Where Social Security Is More Than Enough

February 10, 2022 · Personal finance

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I really live on just Social Security?
Yes, but it requires strict discipline and geographical flexibility. You must eliminate all consumer debt, own your car outright, and relocate to a city where housing costs consume no more than 30 to 40 percent of your monthly benefit.

Which states do not tax Social Security benefits?
As of 2026, the vast majority of U.S. states do not tax Social Security benefits. Only a small handful of states still assess taxes on these benefits, and many of those offer income-based exemptions. Always check with a local tax professional or the state’s department of revenue for the most current laws.

How does moving to a new state affect my Medicare coverage?
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is a federal program and works anywhere in the United States that accepts Medicare. However, if you have a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) or a standalone Part D prescription drug plan, these are highly localized. Moving to a new state—or even a new county—usually triggers a Special Enrollment Period, requiring you to select a new plan operating in your new zip code.
