Pitfalls to Watch For When Relocating

Moving to a new city to capture cheaper rent is a smart mathematical move, but you must execute the transition carefully. Upending your life comes with logistical and financial hurdles that can quickly erode your projected savings if you are not paying attention.

First, beware of extreme isolation. Moving thousands of miles away from children, grandchildren, and lifelong friends can take a severe toll on your mental health. Ensure the money you save on rent allows you to maintain a travel budget so you can fly back to visit family—or afford a guest room so they can visit you.

Second, scrutinize the true cost of utilities. A cheap apartment in an older building might lack proper insulation. If you move to a city with harsh winters or blazing summers, your utility bills could offset your rental savings. Always ask property managers for average historical utility costs before signing a lease.

Finally, factor in the cost of the move itself. Interstate moving companies can charge anywhere from $3,000 to $8,000 depending on distance and volume. Calculate how many months of rent savings it will take to break even on your moving expenses. In many cases, downsizing aggressively and selling heavy furniture before the move is the most financially sound strategy.
