10 Stimulus Check Details That Are Crucial for Social Security Recipients

February 4, 2021 · Personal finance

You Might Not Get All Your Money Right Now if You Have Dependent Children

Do you care for dependent children under the age of 16? Depending on the steps you took earlier, you may not get the extra $600 per child right away. So, if you did not file a 2019 tax return and also didn’t provide the IRS with information about the children by November 21st, you will not receive the extra money from the get-go.

This means that, for now, you’ll only get a standard $600. When you file your 2020 tax return, you can claim the additional $600 per child as a recovery rebate. Basically, you can expect the money to reach you, but compared to other Social Security recipients with dependent children that filed a 2019 tax return or gave the IRS the information they needed, you’ll have to wait longer.

You Won’t Receive a Second Stimulus Check If You’re Listed as a Dependent on Someone’s Tax Return

Are you listed as a dependent on somebody else’s tax return? In that case, you won’t be eligible for a stimulus check. The same thing happened for the first check, so if you were hoping for a change, we’re afraid we can’t give you any good news.

For example, if you live with an adult child that cares for you and that has listed you as a dependent on their tax return, you won’t get a check.
