Working During Retirement? 11 Smart Tips for Seniors!

February 9, 2021 · Saving & Spending

Evaluate All Aspects of Work, Not Just the Paycheck

So we’ve already discussed how focusing on a purpose instead of a paycheck will make you happier. But there are other aspects of work that are just as important.

For some seniors, relocating somewhere closer to the family may be just as important as the purpose of their work, so finding a job nearby would take priority. Others may put their social lives first.

Thus, working with fun, interesting individuals could be exactly what you need in order to keep working during retirement. After all, who wants to spend the rest of their days with people that are bitter and confrontational at work!?

Overcome Age Discrimination

Do you feel like sticking it out until you retire is the only choice you have? Unfortunately, so do a lot of other seniors. Age discrimination is still a serious concern, so while younger folks can quickly jump from one job opportunity to another, those over the age of 65 may not feel like this is a viable option.

Between 1997 and 2016, age discrimination complaints rose by 5,072 (from 15,785 to 20,857), according to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. That being said, 2008 was the worst year for seniors, with complaints reaching an all time high of 24,582.

Overcoming age discrimination may seem like a daunting task, but it’s not impossible!
