Health, Wellness, and Vision Savings

Medicare covers a massive portion of retiree health expenses, but it famously leaves gaps in routine vision, dental, and hearing care. Your membership effectively acts as a bridge for these out-of-pocket costs.

Vision care presents an immediate opportunity for substantial savings. Target Optical and LensCrafters both offer robust benefits, typically taking 50 percent off prescription lenses with the purchase of a frame, plus an extra 10 percent off contact lenses. You also receive discounts on routine eye exams. If you require bifocals or progressives, these discounts frequently eliminate hundreds of dollars from the final register price.

Prescription drugs require a more strategic approach. The AARP Prescription Discounts program, administered by OptumRx, can dramatically lower the cash price of generic and brand-name medications. However, you must navigate this carefully if you have Medicare. You cannot use the discount card simultaneously with your Medicare Part D coverage. Instead, ask your pharmacist to compare the cash price using the discount card against your Part D copay. Choose whichever route leaves more money in your checking account. For official guidance on navigating your primary drug coverage, always utilize the tools available at Medicare.gov.

Your daily fitness routine is also covered. The AARP fitness program offers reduced rates on memberships at thousands of participating gyms nationwide, and sometimes waivers on initiation fees. Staying active is the best preventative healthcare available, and removing the financial friction makes building the habit significantly easier.
