October 27, 2020 · Retirement Life

Why do they work?

Alright, so that begs the question… why do seniors work? Well, the answers might surprise you.

Here’s what responders said in the Transamerica Study. The majority of people aged 50 or older, 56% claimed they were working due to financial reasons. This could mean that, for one reason or another, they hadn’t managed to amass a significant retirement income yet.

47% said they enjoyed what they did. And why should older people feel forced to leave their jobs? There’s no rule stating that as you grow older you have to stop working!

Similarly, 47% of respondents said they like to stay active and their jobs offer them just the right amount of activity that they need. In a similar vein, 34% said they like to keep their brain alert.

Finally, 27% said they wanted to keep on working for a sense of purpose, proving that having too much free time during retirement isn’t always a good thing!
