In the 1990s, the average American consumer purchased around 40 garments a year. By the end of the 90s, the number reached 70. However, most Americans are throwing away approximately 70 pounds of textiles each year in landfills, which means closets can definitely be downsized as well, particularly when consumers are spending less on clothing overall.
