Social Security fraud by Mail
While being scammed via e-mail is much more likely to happen, the practice of being scammed via old-fashioned mail hasn’t vanished completely. In fact, there is one such scheme, where older people are targeted via direct mail scam. A letter comes in the mail, offering you an extra check, with a form asking for personal information and a filing fee attached to it.
In the content of the mail, you’re being asked what your Social Security number is, money requests, and your bank account information to get “help” with the application. If you’ve ever received this, remember it’s a huge red flag.
