Requiring your Social Security number

If you receive a phone call and the caller claims to be from SSA and wants you to confirm your Social Security number (SSN) over the phone, it’s most probably a scam. The SSA has never called anybody to confirm their SSN. This is just impossible. And for that matter, the Social Security Administration would never call you out of the blue.

You must have dealt with them on a personal business matter, such as a benefit claim. In this case, you should know the name and/or ID number of a specific agent and be able to verify that it’s the same worker you spoke to before.
