25 Tips to Save 20% for Your Retirement with No Effort

7. Decrease Fixed Expenses

We often think of our expenses as being part of two categories: fixed expenses and other essential expenses- note, we’re not talking about fun money in this latter category. Other essential expenses include clothes, food, gas money, and so on. Fixed expenses cover rent, utilities, car, cable, and cellphone payments. You get the idea!

Now, we’ve been sort of conditioned to think that unless we make big, swooping changes, we can’t decrease our fixed expenses, but that’s not true! You can always switch to cheaper plans for your cable and phone, especially if your bills seem too big for what you’re actually using.

Is your car insurance a thorn in your side? Don’t forget you can shop around for a new insurer! Don’t forget you can always try negotiating for lower prices. Don’t let the fact that you’re used to certain costs hold you back.
