10. Peru
Peru has long since been known as a friendly, perfectly hospitable place for retirees across the globe. In fact, it has a popular expat destination, Arequipa, where renting a one-bedroom apartment costs as little as $350 a month. On top of that, a three-course meal for two will only cost you between $10 and $12. Isn’t that a steal?
The best part about moving here is being close to breathtaking mountains, being able to explore the Amazon rainforest and other tropical jungles while also immersing yourself in the culture. History buffs might also appreciate living in the heart of the Inca Empire!
It’s best to hold on to your own health insurance and research private clinics like many other expats have. Still, healthcare here is affordable, so you don’t have to stress out about insanely high costs.
You might also wish to research and talk to your doctor about altitude sickness, as this is a concern for tourists and residents alike.
How to retire in Peru
Thankfully, those who are interested in retiring to Peru don’t have to worry about constantly renewing their visas every few years. That’s thanks to the country’s accessible retirement, rentista visa.
Holders will receive permanent resident status, though you must follow a set of rules. First of all, you must spend at least six months of the year in Peru in order to maintain your visa. Furthermore, you must prove that your monthly income is at least $1,000, plus $500 per dependent.
