13. Vietnam
Vietnam seems to be the preferred destination of plenty of expats, and we can see why. Not only is it a country rich in history where you can easily spend your days sightseeing, visiting French colonial relics or Buddhist pagodas, but it’s also crazy cheap!
In Major cities, you can easily live on $1,500 a month, and if you’re a fan of living in a beach town then we recommend Nha Trang or Da Nang for $1,000 per month. In both cases, rent for a one-bedroom flat is around $500.
Two other selling points that other retirees love? The climate here is temperate and pleasant, while you’ll still have a taste of home thanks to the many Western restaurants spread around the region! Of course, we highly recommend tasting Malaysian street foods and we can’t get over the blend of French, Chinese, and Cambodian cuisine either!
How to retire in Vietnam
Since Vietnam doesn’t have a specialized retirement program, you’ll have to apply for a one-year multiple-entry visa instead. That is, of course, unless you are married to a citizen or already have family living there. With it, you will be required to leave the country once every 90 days.
When researching health insurance it’s also important to look to nearby Thailand and Singapore. Malaysia does offer good health care, but it’s always good to have options for particularly serious medical situations.
