The “Help me Grandma” scam
This next example is completely obnoxious, but it needs to be brought to your attention. It’s extremely devious and easy to be done because it relies entirely on an older person willing to help and be there for their loved ones.
The con artists that use this technique targets grandparents that haven’t seen their grandchildren in a long time.
It implies receiving a telephone where the caller acts like the grandchild: “Hi, grandma, I’m your grandchild. Don’t you remember me?” If the elder person responds with a name, the scammer automatically approves and like this, he got himself an identity.
After that, the scammer mentions a big and problematic situation that he/she needs to escape but to do that requires a big amount of money. “Grandma, can you help me? No one needs to know about this” Of course, the grandparent, out of love, helps out the so-called grandchild by sending away their account information. The rest of the story we guess you can imagine.
