10 Frauds Seniors Are Often Confronted With

5. Romance and Companionship Scams

Social isolation is a significant vulnerability for many seniors, and criminals eagerly exploit this through romance scams. These frauds typically begin on social media platforms like Facebook, online gaming communities like Words with Friends, or traditional dating websites. The scammer creates a fake profile using stolen photographs of an attractive, age-appropriate individual.

They spend weeks or months grooming their target, sending daily messages, sharing fake life stories, and building deep emotional trust. Conveniently, they always have a career that keeps them far away—such as working on an offshore oil rig, serving in the military overseas, or managing international construction projects. Eventually, a fabricated crisis strikes. They urgently need money to pay for a medical emergency, customs fees, or a plane ticket to finally come visit you.

Romance scammers are incredibly patient, viewing the long-term emotional manipulation as an investment. Be extremely skeptical of anyone who declares their love quickly but consistently refuses to video chat or meet in person. Never send money, cryptocurrency, or gift cards to an online acquaintance, regardless of how convincing their story sounds.
