10 Frauds Seniors Are Often Confronted With

A worried senior woman stares at her computer screen, illustrating the confusion caused by deceptive pop-up scams.

4. Tech Support and Computer Pop-Up Scams

While browsing the internet, your screen might suddenly lock up, accompanied by a blaring alarm and a flashing red warning claiming your computer is infected with a severe virus. The pop-up typically displays the logo of a trusted technology company like Microsoft or Apple and provides a toll-free number you must call immediately to prevent total data loss.

When you call the number, the fraudulent technician requests remote access to your computer to “diagnose” the issue. Once they are in, they can install spyware, access your personal files, and navigate to your online banking portal. They often run a fake diagnostic test, claim they over-refunded you for their services, and trick you into transferring your own money out of your savings account to correct the “error.”

Never call the number on a security pop-up. Legitimate technology companies do not proactively monitor your personal computer for viruses, nor do they flash urgent phone numbers on your screen. If your computer freezes with one of these warnings, simply turn off the machine by holding down the physical power button.
