El Paso, Texas — $634

Texas is the second-largest in the United States (area wise) hence the popular saying that everything is bigger in the Lone Star state. Everything but one small exception: the price of renting a one-bedroom home.

El Paso does not rank first in terms of the cheapest median rent price on this list, but it is an appealing destination for aspiring retirees who factor in safety, county size and walkability. Not to mention it is one of the best places to live on only your Social Security check. Take that, Detroit!
